Changing the default web browser has always been possible on Windows 10, but the most accurate description of the process is probably that it’s terribly boring. Apparently, Windows 11 will add “bulky” to “annoying” by changing the way you change default applications. Windows 10 had high-level categories where you could choose the web browser, the mail client, or the music player you wanted to make the default. Windows 11 switches which, instead, users first select an application like Chrome, and then choose the default application for each file type as the chrome media, such as .htm, .html, .svg, and even .pdf.
This multi-step process is required to discourage users from changing the default, which is probably what Microsoft wants. Each change is also filled with a confirmatory pop-up window, which makes it even more laborious to simply change the edge on Chrome or any other browser. Although Windows 10 has always had the ability to change the default applications by file type, Windows 11 apparently the default value and the method.
Not surprisingly, the other browser manufacturers are not satisfied with this change and called Microsoft on its ongoing shenanigans. These browser manufacturers may apparently make things a little easier by offering a single button that will automatically change all default values, but it must always be developed and polished. Hope this change is only a temporary thing and that Microsoft will return to the more respectful behavior of the Windows 11 era unfolds.
